Superintendent's Monthly Message - August 2017

Mindset Intentionality, Instruction, Access

MUSD Community,

Welcome Back to the 2017-2018 School Year!  The first day of school is approaching quickly, and while you are soaking up the last days and hours of summer, our staff is preparing to create the best year possible for students in Martinez Unified.  I look forward to seeing all the students as they return to school on August 22, 2017.

You may have recently read that Martinez Unified was listed as the fourth best school district in Contra Costa County.  This was great to read and provided affirmation that the incredible work of staff and students, including the support of our community, is recognized beyond our district boundaries.  Of course, we are setting our sights higher and aiming for the top of the list!

There was no slowing down for MUSD in the summer.  We have many projects still in motion to ensure things are in place for the start of the each year.  Our teachers and classified staff have been hard at work, in many cases on their own time, preparing and working through professional development activities to provide the very best instruction for our students.

There are so many things to be excited about in Martinez Unified as we approach the start of a new year. We have hired some great new classified support staff (9 employees), some more incredible teachers (21 employees), and some outstanding new administrators as well (4 employees). Our academic programs continue to grow, and we have already upgraded many aspects of our technology.

This year, we will see a new English Language Arts curriculum for our elementary school students as they engage in the Units of Study reading program.  This curriculum aligns with our current Writers Workshop program, both of which come from the Teachers College at Columbia University.  Additionally, we will see the continued development of our Computer Science programs at AHS as well as Martinez Junior High School.  I am sure you will hear more about those respective programs from each of the individual schools.  Our CTE (Career Technical Education) pathways at AHS, MJHS, and Vicente/Briones continue to develop as well.

Thanks to the support of our community and the commitment of our Board to address facility needs, we have many exciting things happening both inside and outside of our classrooms.  None of this could be possible without the incredible support our community has provided for the students of this community through the passage of Measure K and more recently Measure R.  Last spring our Board of Education identified John Muir Elementary as one of the first large-scale projects for Measure R.  I look forward to working with the staff, students, and community of John Muir this year to collaborate on this exciting project.

Please take a few minutes to review the information below so you are familiar with some of our new faces in MUSD, many of our celebrations from this summer, and the exciting things to come this year!CJ Cammack

Sincerely,

CJ Cammack, Superintendent
Martinez Unified School District

Sports Upgrades

Football field

All new turf was installed at Alhambra High School, which includes a new filling to keep the turf cooler for our student athletes during competition and practice, as well as keeping our physical education students cooler during their classes on the field.

Facility Upgrades

School building during landscaping work
As we begin the 2017-2018 school year, students and staff will be filing our new classroom building at Alhambra, Building K. This facility is a great example of how the physical environment is changing within the structures of a building to facilitate learning and collaboration that is meaningful for today's students. More interior pictures will be shared in the next newsletter.
